No re-branding for Ghana Tourist Board- Julius Debrah

The new management of the Ghana Tourist Board (GTB) says its bid to reposition the board to pursue its mandate more effectively is by no means an attempt to undertake a re-branding.

It comes as following plans towards a paradigm shift in the board’s marketing approach by fully harnessing present-day Electronic-marketing platforms which are more cost-effective and efficient. The move which is to be implemented this year is said to be geared towards fully exploiting the country’s tourism and hospitality potential for the maximum economic impact.

In respect of this, there were suggestions that the board could be working hand in hand with the Branding Ghana office as two key institutions championing the marketing cause of the country.

The Executive Director of the Ghana Tourist Board (GTB), Julius Debrah however tells Citi Business, though this is not completely wrong, the change in their marketing approach is not necessarily geared towards re-branding the board but consolidating the country’s rich tourism potential.

He indicated that Branding Ghana is looking at how it can extract investment from different perspective but the board want to stay authentic and see the authentic stuffs the nation possess.

He said Ghana is the only country where one particular chief seated in state has both hands full of gold and jewelries and has to be carried by someone and these are some of the things we have to let the world know.

Mr. Debrah advanced his point making reference to the indigenous architectural designs of other African countries.

He said though we might have our interest, as tourism practitioners and promoters, we put our personal interest aside.

He noted that when you go to hotels in countries like Mali, they try to put Saharan architecture and you see Kerperski and Saharan designs and people pay comfortable money to go sleep in and take pictures with the impression they are going to sleep in Fulani mud houses but the inside is like rooms Washington.

Mr. Debrah said the Tourist Board is responsible for the promotion and marketing of the country’s tourism potential as well as ensuring high standards and undertaking experimental joint ventures in the hospitality sector.
